Abstract:Multi-Radio often means that a device has more than one radio interface. This can bring many advantages, such as increased reliability and lower latency. Some research investigates the performance of Multi-Radio networks. However, we find that many simulations are somehow theoretical. There is research showing that the network with multi radios is not necessarily faster than the network with a single radio in real-life simulations [1]. In addition, many radio devices require battery power. Therefore the energy consumption of this kind of device is also worth investigating and optimising. In particular, a single node in the network may act as a relay for multiple other nodes, thereby consuming more energy. A potential solution for this is to increase the transmit power of nodes so that they can connect directly. However, this may also increase the interference. Thus we researched simulations of multi-radio networks using realistic parameters to get data of their performance and energy consumption. It is also found that the topology of a network can affect the energy consumption of a network.
