Abstract: | The increasing demand for sustainable food recommender systems and the overload of information underlines the need for methods such as explainability to offer informed decisions to users. Existing practices and literature in this area currently lack frameworks that translate explainability into technological applications. This research will address this gap by investigating which explainability formats users perceive as effective within sustainable food recommender systems. A literature review will cover existing approaches and identify gaps. The literature review will contribute to designing a conceptual model. Furthermore, evaluation methods such as surveys will be employed to test user perceptions of explainability formats. Moreover, the survey will be developed based on the information available in the literature review to capture the importance of university students regarding sustainable preferences in a system. Students often lack healthy eating habits due to time and budget constraints. Additionally, their current habits have been labelled as unsustainable for the environment. This thesis will explore explanation formats that can assist university students in addressing these concerns within the context of sustainable food recommenders, with students participating in a survey to identify and develop viable formats discovered through literature review and co-creation surveys. The empirical insights into user perceptions of explainability formats offer a foundation for future research and developing a framework for integrating explainability for sustainable food recommender systems. |
