Abstract: | The thesis explores the integration of customized Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based conversational tools to support personalized learning and promote critical thinking in higher education institutions. The aim of this investigation is to support learners by addressing their individual learning needs through features such as goal setting, progress tracking and customized reminders. Additionally, the tool promotes learners’ critical thinking by encouraging independent problem-solving, verifying AI-generated responses, and raising awareness of ethical concerns. The research focuses on the development of AI-based conversational tools based on input from university students and instructors across Europe, with particular emphasis on 61 participants from higher education institutions in the Netherlands and Greece. The methodologies of this study include literature review, survey analysis and text analysis to address the main research question: “How can AI-based conversational tools be customized to support personalized learning and promote critical thinking for students from higher education institutions?”. Insights gathered from university instructors and students inform the implementation of the tool and offer valuable perspectives for improving AI-based conversational tools in higher education institutions. |
