Abstract: | Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall and droughts, disrupting water systems and causing economic losses. Nature-based solutions (NBS) offer a sustainable alternative to traditional infrastructure. This study assesses the impact of NBS on high and low flows in the Vecht catchment using the LISFLOOD-OS hydrological model. Afforestation and soil improvement measures were parameterized and tested in various scenarios. Results showed that afforestation significantly reduced peak flows, particularly in summer, due to increased infiltration and interception capacity. However, its effectiveness depended on large-scale implementation, whereas current policies only plan for a 10% forest cover increase. Soil improvement measures, such as aeration and conservation tillage, reduced surface runoff during heavy rainfall and provided a more feasible solution due to the extensive availability of farmland. Despite these benefits, both measures had minimal impact on low flows and did not significantly improve water availability during droughts. Future research should improve NBS parameterization and explore linkages with groundwater models to better assess long-term effects on baseflow and water availability. A better understanding of NBS impacts will support effective implementation and improve integrated water management. |
