Abstract: | This study investigates how deepfake technology and its regulatory implications are discursively constructed and framed within European Union (EU) discourse. The main research question, How are deepfake technology and its regulatory implications discursively constructed and framed within European Union discourse, focuses on identifying the discursive strategies and frames used in EU policy documents to understand deepfake technology’s societal, political and security implications. To answer this question a qualitative discourse analysis is employed, examining EU legislative texts, such as the European Democracy Action Plan, GDPR and the Digital Services Act. These documents will be systematically collected and analyzed using Atlas.ti software, applying a coding scheme based on two core concepts: discursive frames and discursive strategies. This research is highly relevant due to the increasing use of deepfakes for both creative and malicious purposes, including misinformation and political manipulation. By analyzing how the EU frames deepfake technology, this study will contribute to the understanding of how governance frameworks can balance technological innovation with protecting societal values such as privacy, democracy and security. |
