Abstract: | Crowd safety is crucial in environments with high occupancy rates, as overcrowding can lead to dangerous situations during emergencies. The SmartXp theater (A-138) at the University of Twente is a multifunctional space for lectures, project weeks and events. During events, the occupancy sometimes surpasses the safe limit, posing a risk to the safety of the users of the SmartXp theater. This graduation project aims to develop a privacy-preserving occupancy measurement and assessment system for the SmartXp theater (A-138), to assist the manual assessment. The final concept of the occupancy estimation decision support system (O.E.D.S.) is fully specified and designed. The O.E.D.S. utilizes thermal imaging and image processing to estimate the occupancy. A proof of concept is created to test the functions of the image processor and user interface. During the functional evaluation, the proof of concept could determine the occupancy count for 8% of the functional floor surface of the SmartXp theater. The system effectively preserved the privacy of the users of the SmartXp theater by utilizing thermal imaging and is non-disruptive. The proof of concept of the O.E.D.S. shows great potential as a solution for indoor human occupancy estimation and assessment for the SmartXp theater. |
