Abstract:This research investigated how data from Electronic Health Records in hospitals could be used to improve patient monitoring, specifically in the Netherlands. The main research question is: How can the strategic management of data analytics with EHR improve patient monitoring in hospitals? Initial findings revealed that Dutch hospitals are in the early stages of implementing data analytics projects, which led to a change in focus on the maturity of hospitals in terms of data analytics. For this, a maturity scorecard was created that was used to score the participating case hospitals on their maturity. This scorecard can then give hospitals a direction for change to improve if necessary. This maturity scorecard was used to measure the maturity of five Dutch hospitals, creating five cases of a maturity assessment. Based on these cases a cross-case analysis was performed, which resulted in some prerequisites and requirements that should be in place next to the maturity scorecard. The prerequisites are organisational awareness, data quality, resources overview and management plan, organisational involvement and policies regarding training, workshops and stakeholder involvement. The requirements are continuous evaluation and making policies, standardized working, active resource management and using the maturity scorecard as an evaluation and measurement tool. The main finding was the importance of organizational involvement, something that should always be present during the implementation. The maturity scorecard is a tool that hospitals can use to measure and track their maturity over time. This gives them a guide to measure their maturity and based on the scores take necessary action to improve their maturity for the implementation of data analytics projects that make use of EHR data.
