Abstract:Background: Ecological Momentary Interventions (EMIs) are digital mental health exercises provided throughout the day. The Micro-Randomized Trial (MRT) is a research method that allows for analyzing complex data with multiple measures per person per day and is therefore sufficient in researching the effects of EMIs. In this MRT, the momentary effect of a gratitude EMI on the emotion regulation strategies rumination and positive reappraisal was investigated. Methods. There were 72 participants, mostly German and Dutch students (female participant rate = 66.7%). The data analyzed in this study were collected for four consecutive days of a larger project that lasted 23 days. The days were divided in four blocks. In each block, two Ecological Momentary Assessments measuring the emotion regulation strategies were provided thirty minutes apart. In two random blocks per day, the gratitude EMI was provided in between the two Ecological Momentary Assessments. Results. There were no immediate significant effects after completing the gratitude EMI on rumination (p = .128) and positive reappraisal (p = .384). Conclusion. The gratitude EMI did not have an effect on rumination and positive reappraisal.
