Abstract:Incidents in intellectual disability (ID) care impact clients, fellow clients, and direct care workers. Incidents can occur when continuity of care is disrupted by, for example, staff absenteeism. This study examines the relationship between absenteeism and incident rates at Baalderborg Groep (BBG) to determine whether reducing absenteeism can lower incident rates. A multi-method approach was applied, combining retrospective data analysis (2019-2023) and a survey with direct care workers (n=106, 34.5% response rate). Findings indicate that residential locations account for most absenteeism and incidents, with medication errors and aggression as the most frequent incidents. Quasi-Poisson regression analysis showed a small initial relationship between absenteeism and incidents, but this disappeared when considering confounding factors (location, handicap type, incident type, and an incident the day before). The survey revealed underreporting, with 57.5% of direct care workers not reporting all incidents, affecting dataset completeness and potentially explaining unexpected results. Reasons for not reporting are forgetting, not seeing improvements in care, and repetitive behaviour of clients, which should be improved at BBG. This suggests BBG cannot reduce incidents by preventing absenteeism but can reallocate staff without increasing incidents. Future research should ensure more comprehensive incident data to improve reliability.
