Abstract:Introduction: This study aims to investigate the information preferences of patients undergoing chemotherapy in Isala Hospital to optimize the information provision process and enhance patient-centered care. Method: A Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) was conducted between December 2024 and January 2025. Patients who were receiving chemotherapy at Isala Zwolle completed a questionnaire, including background characteristics, 9 DCE choice tasks, and digital competence and health literacy scaling questions. A logistic regression and counting analysis were performed with R studio to analyse patients’ preferences. Results: Of 107 invited patients, 78 completed the questionnaire. All 5 attributes had a significant impact on patients’ preferences (p < 0.05). Support materials had the highest relative importance (32.2%) and preparation of the patient was the lowest (11.3%). Patients preferred text-based formats over podcasts and videos. A shorter duration of the consultations is preferred to higher levels of consultation duration. Consecutive meetings, consultation 1 week before treatment, and optional preparation of the patient for the meeting also had a significant positive impact on the patients’ preferences for the information provision for chemotherapy. Discussion and conclusion: A revised information process is proposed, including pre-consultation preparation, shorter consultation duration, and revised content information, to enhance the patient-centeredness of the care process. A pilot study is recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of the revised process and ensure accessibility of the process for patients with low digital competence or low health literacy.
