Abstract:This thesis studies how automated feedback from home-based health sensors can be designed with a compassionate focus. As healthcare systems face increasing pressure, home-based care supported by digital tools becomes more relevant. However, current feedback systems tend to be task-focused, with little attention paid to emotional tone or message framing. Compassion, understood as the recognition of suffering and the intention to alleviate it, is a key value in healthcare and should be reflected in the way feedback is communicated. This study addresses two research gaps: the lack of transparency in feedback design processes and the absence of compassion as a design focus in health technology. The research follows the Double Diamond design method, applying the Discover, Define, and Develop phases. A literature review was conducted to understand the current state of feedback in health-related technology, which led to the development of a set of guidelines for designing compassionate automated feedback. These are based on six core elements: three related to compassion (recognition of suffering, attempt to alleviate it, and personalisation) and three related to automated feedback (humanisation, interactivity, and empathy). The guidelines are illustrated through two user personas based on chronically ill patients. This prototype offers a starting point for further research and development
