Abstract:In today’s globalized business economy, effective cross-cultural negotiation is essential for securing favorable outcomes and fostering sustainable partnerships. This study investigates the negotiation process between Dutch and Japanese companies, particularly focusing on how Dutch businesses can adapt their strategies to negotiate more effectively with Japanese firms. Through the use of semi-structured interviews with Dutch negotiators, this study identifies six key elements that are essential for successful negotiations in Japan: focus on details, respect, harmony, hierarchy, loyalty, and the challenges of translation. The study finds that Japanese companies emphasize long-term relationships, product quality, indirect communication, detailed discussions, seniority, collective decision-making, and high standards for preparation. It further highlights the need for Dutch companies to adapt to these Japanese business standards to avoid cultural friction that could harm negotiations. This research largely supports current literature on cross-cultural behavior, but also highlights the limitations of Hofstede’s dimensions in explaining observed real-life behavior. In practice, this research offers actionable recommendations for Dutch companies to improve negotiations with Japanese partners. Future research should incorporate more Japanese perspectives and focus on specific industries.
