Abstract: | This thesis explores how blockchain technology can support the transition of urban food systems from growth-oriented sustainable development toward strong sustainability, guided by degrowth and commons principles. It critically examines the limitations of current sustainability frameworks, highlighting how weak sustainability and sustainable development fail to address ecological and social challenges. Through a philosophical and conceptual lens, the study investigates blockchain’s potential to enhance transparency, traceability, and community governance. While not a standalone solution, blockchain can contribute to more just, localized, and ecologically sound urban food systems—provided it is integrated into broader, post-growth frameworks centred on equity, resilience, and the preservation of natural capital. |
