Abstract:The influence of human density, spatial density, presence of salespeople and the desire for control on the perceived control and the positive emotions of store visitors have been examined in this research. The visitors were asked to rate photographs, which were edited by manipulating both forms of density and the (non)presence of the sales personnel, on emotions. The effect on the perceived control plays a central role. We have added the desire for control of the visitors as an extra dimension. The results suggest that spatial density and the presence of salespersonnel strongly effects the perceived control of individual visitors. Human density mainly effects the positive emotions. We also found evidence that the desire for control plays a role in processing environmental situations. The implications of the findings are discussed and advice is proposed for store management and future research.
