Abstract:This report describes what information local authorities need in regards to rail transport of hazardous goods. The report focusses on local authorities located in the vicinity of railway tracks. The main research question is: What information do Dutch local authorities need in regards to the rail transport of hazardous goods and do local authorities appreciate the current information supply? Local authorities use the information for the following four purposes: - To prepare for an incident - To manage the incident when it occurs - For planning purposes - To inform the community of the risks In general local authorities have sufficient basic information in regards to the type and quantity of materials. However local authorities needs more detailed information so they can take safety measures before the incident management team arrives on site. There is a "rail risk atlas " available, which local authorities can use for planning purposes. However the information in the atlas is dated. More detailed and up to date information is available, but a lot of local authorities do not know where to obtain the information from. There is not a lot of information available that local authorities can use to inform their residents about the railtransport and the risks. However most local authorities have no communication strategy in place yet. In the future local authorities will be able to use risk maps to inform their residents about the railtransport risks in their community. However these maps are still in an early state of development.
