Abstract:This thesis focuses on the factors that influence migration of highly educated professionals. Over the last decades, there has been a brain drain situation in the Dutch region Twente: highly educated professionals and graduated students move to other Dutch regions to enter the labour market. Because of this shift in labour, organisations in Twente experience more and more difficulties filling in the heavier job openings. The factors influencing this migration behaviour were examined by means of a literature study, structured interviews and an online survey. The results show that there are several keepfactors, pushfactors and pullfactors that influence migration behaviour of highly educated professionals from and to Twente. Especially emotional factors, labour market related factors, social network factors and environmental factors seem to have a high keep function. People who have a connection with Twente or who already have an intention to leave their current region have a stronger intention to settle in Twente. The major pullfactors of the region involve the attractiveness of the environment, the labour market and the emotional appeal of the region. The geographical position of the region is the major factor that keeps people from moving to Twente
