Abstract:Within the current HRM literature the concept that HRM influences the skills, attitudes and behaviour of employees and therefore had can influence the organisational performance positively is widely accepted (Dorenbosch, de Reuver & Sanders, 2006; Wright, Dunford & Snell, 2001). The relationship between manager and employee plays a part in improving the organisational performance, the degree in which the employee thinks that his manager displays effective leadership is an important indicator of this individual relationship. The opinion of the employee about the effectiveness of his manager’s leadership can be influenced by HRM, because the line manager often implements the HRM policy. This research focuses on the relations between organisational-focus and the consistency of HRM practices on one hand and the effectiveness of the manager on the other. The research is conducted using data on 114 managers and 228 employees in 114 companies, from all over the Netherlands. The results of this research show that the degree of organisational-focus of HRM practices is positively related to the effectiveness of the manager. A positive relation between consistency of HRM practices and the effectiveness of the manager could not be proven. However consistency does play a role in the additive effect which consistency and organisational-focus have on the effectiveness of the manager. Therefore the degree of organisational-focus and consistency are both of importance for the relationship between manager and employee.
