Abstract:This research investigates if the relationship between transformational leadership and knowledge sharing can be explained by the degree of cohesion between team members. The survey has been conducted amongst the teacher teams of 14 different schools for higher education. A total of 259 respondents (9% response rate) participated in the research by filling out a survey questionnaire. It was expected that transformational leadership, knowledge sharing and cohesion would be positively related and that cohesion would fulfill a mediating role in the relationship between transformational leadership and knowledge sharing. Our research confirms the direct and positive correlation between transformational leadership, knowledge sharing and cohesion. The expected mediating role of cohesion between transformational leadership and knowledge sharing came out to be of very minor or no importance. Against prior expectations cohesion was found to have a moderating role in the relationship between transformational leadership and knowledge sharing. Our research critique challenges these findings. The final recommendations suggest further research to be conducted and emphasize the impact of the type of leadership that is being provided.
