Abstract:Research shows that the number of diagnosed hiv-infections and other STDs in the Netherlands is still rising. Furthermore, it is evident that adolescents are more at risk than others. The same can be said about people with a different ethnic background, in particular people from Suriname or the Antilles (RIVM, 2006). The current study focuses on testing two models that try to explain and predict unsafe behaviour: the Theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen, 1985) and the Prototype Willingness Model (Gibbons & Gerrard, 1995). The Theory of Planned Behaviour assumes that behaviour is both rational and intentional. However, even though the model is very capable in explaining intention, it often explains less than a quarter of the variance in unsafe behaviour (Armitage & Conner, 2001). As a response to this, the Prototype Willingness Model was developed. This model concentrates on explaining and predicting unsafe behaviour that is not intentional, and it does so by measuring prototypes. This leads to another goal of the current research, which was to determine whether a behaviour specific prototype works better than a general prototype when it comes to explaining and predicting unsafe behaviour. Also, the research intended to see if there was a difference between the influence of safe sex prototypes and unsafe sex prototypes. And, finally, the influence of the variables prototype contemplation, prototype similarity and prototype attractiveness was examined.
