Abstract:This study analyses how male and female leaders differ in their level of self-other agreement and what causes these differences. Hereby the relationship between gender, transformational leadership, team cohesiveness and self-other agreement was investigated as well as the relationship between the gender composition of the dyad between leader and subordinate and self-other agreement. Data from 114 managers and 228 subordinates in 114 Dutch organizations showed that, contrary to the expectations, female leaders did not show higher self-other agreement than did their male counterparts and transformational leadership did not work as a mediator. On the other hand, team cohesiveness did have a small mediating effect on the relationship between transformational leadership and self-other agreement. Contrary to what would be expected from a relational demography perspective, same-sex dyads had lower levels of self-other agreement than different-sex dyads and the Vm dyad (V=female leader, m=male subordinate) had the highest level of self-other agreement. The results clearly point out that it is important to study self-other agreement at the level of the dyads between leader and subordinate, hereby taking characteristics of the dyads like gender composition into account.
