Abstract:Background: In the Netherlands one in five persons suffer from mental disorders, like depression or anxiety disorder. These mental disorders have a high negative impact on the quality of life. They also cause high costs in the health care and economic costs through lost of employment. To prevent this, this project evaluated a preventive course based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT has not used before as prevention. ACT is a new behaviour therapy where the general goal is to increase the psychological flexibility, rather than focusing on the elimination of psychological complaints. Using this method people with different complaints can join the preventive course. The research question is: “What are the effects of the preventive course “Voluit Leven” based on ACT on psychological complaints and psychological flexibility as compared to a waitlist and what does this mean for the application of ACT as prevention?”.
