Abstract: | Which consequences does the deficiency of intrinsic and extrinsic work characteristics have for health, happiness and job-search behaviour among the unemployed? This was the central question in the current study. To what extent unemployed people value intrinsic work characteristics was measured by determining the intrinsic commitment to work. It was expected and confirmed that a high level of intrinsic commitment to work has negative consequences for health and happiness, in case of unemployment. Moreover, unemployed people with a high degree of intrinsic commitment exhibited more intensive job-search behaviour than the unemployed with a low degree of intrinsic commitment to work. The influence of extrinsic work characteristics on health, happiness and job-search behaviour was also investigated. A lack of extrinsic work characteristics is partially compensated by social security, but the influence of this payment has never been investigated before. It appeared that a poorly functioning social security system elicits decreased health and happiness. It also caused more intensive job-search behaviour in terms of the number of applications and the willingness to accept work under mediocre conditions. Effects of intrinsic commitment on health and on the diversity in search methods being used were moderated by a lack of extrinsic work characteristics |
