Abstract:Purpose - The main purpose of this research is to get a clear view of the attitudes and expectations of hire-in companies (supervisors and managers in organizations in which temp agency workers perform their work) concerning temp agency workers and to eventually decide whether temp agency workers, like permanent employees, can receive a ‘mutual-investment’ approach or an ‘overinvestment’ approach from their hire-in company. Methodology - The emphasis is on qualitative data collection through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires held with eight managers in four Dutch companies/institutions; two cleaning companies, two metal companies and one school. Findings - It appears from this research that not only permanent employees, but also temp agency workers can expect a ‘mutual-investment’ approach or an ‘overinvestment’ approach from their hire-in company. These findings don’t agree with Tsui & Wui’s (2005) claims, namely that temp agency workers can only expect a ‘quasi-spot’ contract or an ‘underinvestment’ approach from their hire-in company. Discussion/practical implications - Some constraints of this research will be discussed, whereupon recommendations for further research and practical recommendations for representatives from hire-in companies and temp work agencies will be given
