Abstract: | The introduction of competition has changed the structure and functioning of the Dutch gas sector considerably. One of the major impacts for energy companies has been the unbundling of energy distribution and energy supply. The unbundling has led to independent regionally based gas and electricity network companies responsible for gas and electricity distribution in certain regions. Continuon Netbeheer is one of the regionally based distribution companies in the Netherlands with licence to distribute gas and electricity in Gelderland, Noord-Holland, large parts of Flevoland, Friesland and Zuid-Holland. Next step in the unbundling process is the establishment of Continuon Netbeheer as independent organisation from the holding Nuon. Continuon is facing the challenge of developing a corporate strategy that enables the company to develop a good position in the liberalised energy market and a good profit position now and in the future. This thesis project is meant to provide Continuon with specific suggestions for developing such a position by means of an assessment of the current business strategy and strategic position in the perspective of the changes in the energy market. The project concentrates on the gas distribution activities of Continuon. More specifically the research objective is: To support Continuon in their business development and offer a specific set of strategic options to improve their position in the current and future liberalized gas market. The problem definition that has been formulated is: What will be an effective strategic position for Continuon now and in the future given the changes in the gas market and gas distribution? |
