Abstract:In this study it is tested if linking affective information to product qualities has any effect on product preferences, depending on whether the information is presented subliminally or supraliminally. The effects of subliminal priming had not been investigated in this context before. In order to get an answer to the research question participants were asked to estimate the price of a number of products with a number of properties, these properties were linked to either positive or negative affect earlier in the study by showing a supposed salesman either laughing or frowning. The results show that those for whom affect was linked subliminally estimated the prices higher than those for whom affect was linked supraliminally. This is probably the result of mistrust people may hold against salesmen.
