Abstract:Background: A chronic physical illness has a great negative impact on the physical, social and psychic life of an individual. The course “Living to the fullest” is developed for people with psychic symptoms and has already been shown to lead to improvements in depression, anxiety and exhaustion symptoms in a group with clinical relevant psychic symptoms. Because the course isn’t developed for the chronically physically ill, the purpose of this pilot study is to investigate whether the course “Living to the fullest” should be revised for the chronicle physical ill and the effect of the course on the target group. Methods: Ten participants with a physical chronic illness have completed the course “Living to the fullest”. Thirteen participants have completed and send the questionnaires. The measures were taken at the beginning of the course(T0) and after the seventh meeting or at the end of the course (T1). The effects were measured with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ, mindfulness) and the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHCSF, Positive Mental Health). The process evaluation was performed with a self-developed questionnaire for the participant, a self-developed interview for the participants and a selfdeveloped interview for the coach. SPSS 18 was used for data analysis for the effect study and the process evaluation was describing. Results: The course “Living to the fullest” increases the positive mental health and mindfulness significantly in chronically physically sick patients. The process evaluation showed that the chronically physical ill were satisfied with the course. However the intensity of the course is too high for them. Also there is a need for more information on chronic physical illnesses. Conclusion: The course “living to the fullest” is effective for the chronicle physical ill. The chronicle physical ill are satisfied with most parts off the course. But there need to be more meetings created with less information and there should be a flyer created discussing the course and chronicle physical illness. To conform the results there is still more research needed.
