Abstract:Start position for this research is the aim to expand collaboration between museums in the local area. Scientific research shows that the need for collaboration in the non-profit sector is increasing. This research shows the feasibility of collaboration between five local museums. There is made use of an interview session, to collect information from the five participating museums. These interviews are based on a theoretical framework. This framework exists of general aspects, purposes, pros and cons, forms and possible levels of collaboration. Based on these definitions the research is done. The purposes of starting a collaboration relationship are: (1) efficiency (2) knowledge-exchange and (3) market positioning. Different forms of collaboration exist, because of the range of purposes, such as: to improve or share, for renewal or to exchange with another institution. An important factor in establishing collaboration is the role of trust; trust is seen as the basis for collaboration. The example of a collaborating group of museums in Leiden shows useful information, because of the duration of the existence of this collaboration form. Collaboration can be seen as a process; this is also the purpose of this report, to view the possibilities and options collaboration can have. Results from the interview session show that each participant is willing to communicate with other museums about the possibility of expanding their level of collaboration. By formulating a strategy, the process of collaboration can be structured to diminish the possibility of endless discussions or confusion. This shared strategy is necessary to formulate, because the results have showed that the motives for collaboration are scattered at the moment. This means that the current results do not lead to an advice for a specific form or level of collaboration. The participants gave different answers toward this question and it is highly dependent on the (eventually) upcoming process of collaboration. Main recommendation that is given is to plan a possibility to discuss with participants of this study what the possibilities on short term are for collaboration. Specific recommendation like the proposed combination of educational functions of the museums and the recommendation to make use of collaboration contracts when further collaboration is planned to ensure a growth in commitment. This report is the basis for the growth of (relational) trust, which is seen as the essential factor for collaboration. Based on the interview results and recommendations the participants of this research can make their decision if they will start the process of collaboration.
