Abstract:This research project was performed for the ‘Stichting ter Bevordering van Vrolijkheid’ at the refugee asylum centre in Markelo. The foundation offers creative activities to refugee minors, such as rap, break dance and girls activities in weekly workshops. The effect of these activities on the children’s social and psychological wellbeing was investigated with semi-structured interviews. The participants were also asked to evaluate the five main objectives of the foundation (i.e. happiness, trust, resilience, narrative and safety). Thirteen children aged between 12 and 21 years old, took part in the study. The results show that the activities improve the wellbeing of the youth through making them happier. They also consider the activities to be instructive and especially value its social aspects. The activities give the participants a sense of control, an opportunity to tell their story and a way to distract themselves. It is considered to be something that occupies their time. Possibly the participants experience an increase in resilience as well. The objectives happiness and trust were evaluated best by the participants. Safety was not considered so successful. The objective ‘narrative’ was evaluated positive as well as negative. Resilience was considered to be average. The main implications of the research are that it has to be taken into account that both the social and the instructive component are of great importance in the activities.
