Abstract:The theme of robberies1 got a lot of attention from politics after figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics showed an unexpected increase in robberies in 2007. In a reaction to those figures action was taken by politics to reduce the amount of robberies. Additional detectives were employed and the robbery taskforce was established. In addition the police took action as well to decrease the amount of robberies. Several collaborations on the repression of robberies were established and “the national analysis of robbery” was launched in 2009. This analysis provides an overview of the amount and kind of robberies in the different police regions in the Netherlands. It showed that the amount of robberies had increased in several economic sectors since 2006. A remarkable fact was that a relative high amount of robberies took place in private homes and that this amount was still increasing. Because this kind of robberies seemed to be a trend and because of its large impact on victims and society the police wanted to collect as much information on this subject as possible. The purpose of this gathering of information is to develop a more effective way of reducing robberies by the police.
