Abstract:This work aims at examining in how far the sustainability criteria imposed by the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) 2009/28/EC represent a way to operationalize the concept of sustainability and thereby to put green accounting into practice. Against this theoretical background a descriptive analysis elaborates on the effect and various practical implications of the RED’s sustainability criteria regarding the specific case of Indonesian palm oil. In a further step, the conclusions drawn from the Indonesian problem context will be categorized as weaknesses, strengths, opportunities and threats according to the empiricalanalytical SWOT-Analysis. Building on these results, relevant normative policy recommendations regarding future EU Bioenergy policy-making will be finally deduced.
