Abstract:Extreme weather can have major consequences for the Dutch public. ‘Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut’ [KNMI] warns of extreme weather conditions with a weather warning. This research strives to determine the factors that might increase the self-protection behavior among citizens during extreme weather conditions. The study was a 2 (high and low risk perception) x 2 (high and low efficacy beliefs) between subject experiment. perception) x 2 (high and low efficacy beliefs) between subject experiment. The dependent variables are the intention to information seeking and the intention to engage in risk preventive behavior. The study also examined the relationship between the intention to information seeking and the intention to engage in risk preventive behavior. Lastly, it was examined if positive or negative judgment about KNMI influences the intention to information seeking and the intention to engage in risk preventive behavior. Results showed that high levels of risk perception do not lead to an increased level of both intention to information seeking and the intention to engage in risk preventive behaviors than low levels of risk perception. This trend also occurred for efficacy beliefs. Results showed that the intention to information seeking coincides with the intention to engage in risk preventive behavior. Finally, the results showed that positive judgment lead to an increased level of both the intention to information seeking and the intention to engage in risk preventive behavior. The implications of the results are discussed.
