Abstract: | This study has attempted to increase the knowledge of leadership effectiveness within SMEs. this is done by exploring the direct and indirect effects of different leadership styles on the employee attitudes work engagement and commitment. Particular attention is paid to the transformational and transactional leadership style.Hyptotheses were tested by using questionnaires collected from 18 firms belonging to the Dutch SMEs. The results of the regression analysis show that transformational has a positive effect on work engagement and commitment and is a better predictor of both outcomes than transactional leadership. Furthermore, the results of the mediation analysis show that the relationship between transformational leadership behavior on both employee attitudes ( work engagement and commitment) is mediated by trust. Also a moderating effect had been found of perceived threat of the economic situation on the relationship between transactional leadership and work engagement. The more threat is perceived by employees, the less effective transacional leadership is. |
