| Abstract: | The goal of this study is to identify the mediating effect of reflection on the relationship of authentic leadership and professional development. Professional development is measured by two variables: innovative behavior and the implementation of new ideas into practice. A quantitative research has been executed among 111 supervisors of the Dutch fire brigade. The results showed that authentic leadership and reflection do influence innovative behavior as well as the implementation of new ideas into practice. Furthermore, the expected moderation effects of self-efficacy and time for reflection on the relationship of authentic leadership and reflection cannot be confirmed at first hand. An ‘ad hoc’ analysis showed that when authentic leadership is solely operationalized by the ‘internalized moral perspective’, both moderators turn out to have a significant effect. Additionally, it has been found that time for reflection as well as self-efficacy do influence reflection, innovative work behavior and its transfer into practice directly. |
