Abstract:Identity develops by social interaction in a social context. Thereby especially Facebook is an important medium for communication of young adults. This study analyzes the relation between the identity development of young adults and the content of activity on Facebook. Aspiration of the study is to be able to make a statement about the relation between identity development and the use of “Social Network Sites” (SNS). Therefor an online survey (n=111) was designed to measure the relation between the use of Facebook, the published information and the identity development. The survey is based on Erikson’s theory of ego development. The results show that Facebook is an important medium because the participants spent a lot of time on Facebook and provide information to express their identity. Furthermore the amount of published information on Facebook decreases if the age of the participants increases. Nevertheless, the assumed relation between the use of Facebook and identity development could barely evinced. However, there should be differences between the identity statuses with regard on activities, like reading wall posts, by the use of a bigger sample.
