Abstract:Recent deception detection research lacks ecological validity, where free choice to lie makes a part of it. However, this research takes this aspect in account and will research the effect of free choice and cognitive load on the amount of lies and the difference in skin conductance between lie and truth. Therefore participants are fully free to choose in this research. By measuring skin conductance response the difference between lie and truth is established. Additionally, this study is compared to an earlier study including instructions to lie. This study reveals that there are effects of cognitive load, which can be affiliated to free choice. Free choice has a direct influence on lying, but not a direct one on the difference in skin conductance. However, the effect of it can be moderating. Therefore further research on the effect of free choice in relation to other factors important for lying is necessary in order to draw valid conclusions about deception detection and increase understanding in society.
