Abstract: | “Social Network Sites” (SNS) like Facebook are rising up as new social environments. In my study, I examine the impact of Facebook on the identity development because the social environment plays a crucial role in the development of adolescents (Stern, 2004). The aim of my study is to give a statement whether there is a relation between identity development and SNS use. I analyze whether users of different identity states use Facebook in different manners. 67 respondents, mostly psychology students, filled in questionnaires about their SNS use and identity development. The results show that Facebook is an important social environment as respondents logged on more than once a day and spent an average of 11.2 hours per week on Facebook. The respondents give information on Facebook in order to express their identity. I found no relation between identity development and SNS use. Respondents of different identity states seem to use Facebook in the same manner but there are trends that respondents in foreclosure update their profile more often and users who are identity achieved are more frequently active on Facebook than users in other identity states. In the discussion, I agree to the paradox that Facebook is an expression of identity, but that it does not reflect the identity development. Weaknesses and ideas for prospective research are discussed. |
