Abstract:Introduction In this study the long-term effects of the self-help course ‘op verhaal komen’, based on reminiscence were explored nine month after the course was finished. The effects were measured on different factors: Depressive symptoms, positive mental health, ‘narrative foreclosure’, ‘rumination’ and ‘ego-integrity’. Methods Participants were aged 40 years and older with a moderate depression. Participants (N = 116) were randomly assigned over two conditions: The experimental condition ‘op verhaal komen’ (N = 58) and the control condition where the participants received a minimal intervention, ‘expressief schrijven’ (N = 58). There have been four different measurements: t0 = baseline measurement, before the course, t1 = three month after baseline, t2 = six month after baseline and t3 = one year after baseline. Five different tests were used to analyze the effects: 1. Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) 2.Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) 3. ’Narrative Foreclosure Scale’ 4.’Ruminative Response Scale’ 5.‘Ego-Integrity Scale’. Only those participants who filled in all questionnaires completely were analyzed. Regression analysis was carried out to determine whether scores in experimental conditions, nine month after the course, differed significantly from the control condition. Results Only a few significant differences were found between the intervention and the minimal intervention. These differences were found on ‘regret’, ‘coherence’ and ‘narrative foreclosure future’. In contrast to the expectations, all of the found differences were in favor of the minimal intervention ‘expressief schrijven’. Discussion The course ‘op verhaal komen’ shows some effect on depressive symptoms when compared to a waiting list (t1 and t2). Nevertheless seems the control group ‘expressief schrijven’ just as, if not more effective than the course ‘op verhaal komen’. This study suggests that both courses are qualified for decreasing depressive symptoms in individuals aged 40 years or older with moderate depressive symptoms.
