Abstract:Reality TV programmes are very popular nowadays and are viewed by millions of people, but there is still little knowledge about the attractiveness of these programmes. Several studies have shown that there are different motives to watch reality tv and that individual differences may affect the viewing habits of people. This study focused on the role of personality in viewing motives for different genres of reality TV. An online questionnaire was developed to gather information about this subject. The questionnaire consisted of a personality test (the Ten-Item Personality Inventory) and of statements about viewing motives for different genres of reality TV. The results show that for each personality trait, there are different motives for different genres of reality tv. The study shows, however, that not every personality trait has a significant influence on the viewing motives and that the personality traits that do play a part, are not significant for every motive of every genre. Further research is necessary to explain the emerged relationships between personality and viewing motives.
