Abstract:This report was written to identify new ways to guide order pickers in their picking processes. The report is structured strictly following the rules of systematic product design, which deivides the report in several parts. After some introductory chapters to familiarize the reader with warehousing terms and concepts, the report describes the research that was done about the currently existing auxiliary systems for order pickers. Also one experimental system is discussed. In this part the reader is introduced with the working principle of systmes, the advantages and disadvantages, applications and cost. Then, the existing auxiliary methods are evaluated to get an idea about their performance. Some conclusions about properties that influence the performance of a system in a positive of negative way are drawn. From this point a program of requirements for the next design phase has been derived. Whil keping the program of requirements in mind, ideas are generated for a new order picking auxiliary. the ideas are all solutions to small parts of the process. All individual ideas are assessed in a large assessment matrix. The best ideas (or partial solutions) are combined to generate three concepts. The concepts are assessed in the same way as the ideas. The best concept is expanded a little more. The main conclusions are the identified properties that influence the performance of the system as well as a concrete concept that can be further investigated in future work. My recommendations for subsequent research are to validate the results of this work with experimental data, to test the concept on performance and user experience and tot produce a working prototype to conduct an endurance test.
