Abstract: | This report contains a research to determine possible new use functions of garages and a design process of the implementation of these functions. The project is commissioned by D’Andrea & Evers Design and Timmerfabriek Overbeek. In the first phase of the project a literature research was executed. In this section the different kinds of garages, the environment, the current use functions and the current garage conversions were discussed. In the next phase of the project a brainstorm session was executed to determine possible new use functions for garages. Therefore several use function categories were formed on the basis of the preliminary research: house extension, professional, recreational, social, practical and esthetical. Using these categories a wide range of possible new use functions was gathered. An image of the potential functions was formed by classifying the functions to the costs and efforts of the minimal adjustments and to the expected market demand. Therefore a distinction was made between the different kinds of garages. Many implementation feasibilities were gathered in several sketching session from different starting points. This variety of ideas led to the thought to present all these ideas to the consumer. This way the consumer will be inspired and might think of new ideas for utilization of his/her garage. The joinery works could create a personal design for the garage per consumer matching his/her wishes. This idea matches the need for distinctiveness in the building industry. After the concepts were determined a list of requirements was drafted. This list was drafted in this phase of the project, so there were no restrictions during the idea generation. This appeared to be quite important for this project. This way a different perspective on garages is created. Finally the concept ‘Replaceable elements’ was further developed in the field of construction of the wall elements and the design of the garage door frame. Typical for this concept are replaceable wall elements with a specific function, like a desk or a closet. By replacing the wall elements the concept is adaptable to other functions. Besides that, the concept gives a clear impression of the possibilities of the garage. |
