Abstract:The government of Balkenende IV started in 2007 with an approach focused on problems in 40 so called priority neighbourhoods. Seven experiments were started in these areas. One of the seven experiments, achter de voordeur (behind the front door), focuses on the approach of multi-problem families. This experiment aims to explore new ways to align the available care for multi-problem families. This is the reason this research about the cooperation of care providers around multi-problem families has been conducted. Multi-problem families can have multiple and complex problems. These problems can be divided into six problem areas: housing, work, finance, raising children, health and safety. The characteristic of multi-problem families is that they have problems in many of these areas. Therefore they have contact with several care providers. These care providers often do not tune their care to each other. A consequence is that the family is not sure for which problems they get which help. It is therefore possible that families lose overview on the various types of care provided by these organizations. In addition, the care providers can also lose overview on the given aid because the care providers do not know who is involved in giving care to the family. As a result families might get no help, duplicate help or conflicting help for their problems. This can have major implications for the care in multi-problem families. To prevent that families and care providers lose the overview, the solution can be collaboration between care providers. Collaboration between different professionals who pursue a common goal is called network collaboration. To achieve this goal tasks must be coordinated. This can be done in several ways and in this research is called the coordination in networks. The coordination in networks can be set up in various ways. The purpose of this study is to find an effective form of coordination in networks of care organizations around multi-problem families. The research question is: what form of network coordination is effective in a network of organizations dealing with socio-economic and psychosocial problems of multi-problem families? To answer this research question, six sub-questions are asked. The first three constitute the theoretical part, the last three constitute the empirical part of the research.
