Abstract:The aim of this research is to see which variables are related to the attitude of workers relative to performance related pay. For this study a cross-sectional research is used with one moment of measurement. Workers are approached per email with the question if they would fill in a questionnaire on work characteristics, valuation and performance related pay to answer. The questionnaire is disseminated within the own network via snowball- sampling. The Job content questionnaire of Karasek (1979), the effort-reward imbalance questionnaire of Siegrist et al. (2004) and a questionnaire on the attitude relative to performance related pay are used to measure whether there are differences between employees with a positive attitude and negative attitude towards performance related pay. In addition, there has been looked at what factors affect the attitude relative to performance related pay. The results showed that there is no difference between the social demographic characteristics of employees who are positive or negative toward performance pay. In addition, there is a difference found in variables derived from the model of Karasek (1979) and Siegrist et al. (2004) between employees with a positive attitude towards performance related pay and employees with a negative attitude towards performance related pay. These variables have a moderate predictive value for the attitude towards performance related pay. Only effort is ultimately related to performance pay. When workers exhibits a higher effort they would have a more positive attitude towards performance related pay.
