Abstract:In the Netherlands almost 75 people die in house fires every year and almost 1000 people get injured. This is why the fire department in Twente wants to check the houses in their region on fire safety and give the habitants advice on how to make their house safer. This study focuses on the variables that can enhance people’s intention to execute preventive behavior and actual preventive behavior. This study contains of two field experiments which overlap and are executed simultaneously. The first is a 2 (fear appeal: fear information vs. neutral information)*2 (house type: owner vs. renter) between subjects experimental design. The second is a 2 (fear appeal: fear information vs. neutral information)*2 (Source credibility: fire department vs. housing association) between subjects experimental design. This study tested if a combination of fear appeal and efficacy messages have a positive effect on the preventive behavior of the habitants. This combination was based on the EPPM. The study also tested if source credibility and the house type have a roll in this behavior. Results show that after a house check people have high intentions to execute the advised behavior. The results also show that the EPPM has a good fit in this study. Other results are discussed in the discussion chapter.
