Abstract: | From February till May in 2012, I did an internship at VIRO in Hengelo. The tasks during this internship were not pre-defined, because an engineering company like VIRO never knows what kind of assignments are available. In the first few weeks I started making drawings for several technical machines developed by VIRO for other companies. In the last two months, an assignment came available for a fatigue analysis on a chain for a continuously variable transmission. The chain was already subjected to a basic analysis and was tested by another company, during these tests a particular mechanism of failure occurred. It was my task to find out if this position of failure could be explained by fatigue. The chain was simplified to create a Finite Element Model, only one chain-link was modeled. With the use of the software FEMAP and Matlab, several load cases were analyzed and a method was defined to find critical equivalent stress values to analyze on fatigue. The result was not satisfactory, since the fatigue analysis described a different position of failure, than occurred in the tests. |
