Abstract:This Bachelor thesis has been executed at Plant-e B.V., a spin-off from the Wageningen University, Plant-e which possesses a technology with which energy can be harvested out of living plants. This project started with a research proposal, which was the base for the whole assignment. This research proposal consisted of an orientation on the client, a part about the assignment and its attendent challenges and the strategies and planning for the execution. After finishing this proposal the work on the assignment started. The first phase included defining the target group, investigating the technology and searching for the strengths and weaknesses of Plant-e. The most important conclusion after this phase was that Plant-e has a good chance of designing and producing a creative and unique product with their technology. Based on the strengths found in the first phase some sketching of ideas and associations for the coming gadget was started. Ideas considering sustainability, electrical applications and form studies were explored in these sketches. The next step dealt with the electrical applications that could be used in the gadget. The three directions that have been chosen were; light, sound and time. Raw Shaping was used to make a prototype for each of these directions, after which light and sound appeared to be the best applications to be used in the gadget. At the same time the designing of the system design was started. The most important question here; how can Plant-e’s technology be configured to work in a small product? In consultation with Plant-e the system design was adjusted and optimized until it reached an adequate level. In the final concept the system design and the electrical application are combined. Then a prototype was made with which the working can be demonstrated. Of course a number of problems emerged here that need to be improved or adapted in a future (re)design. During the whole project everything was textually and visually captured, the total survey of which is presented to you here.
