Abstract:In this assignment design implications were examined to reduce dropout in a health related stand alone learning programme. This situations is related to e-learning contexts in which the dropout of students also is high and significantly more than traditional forms of education (Parker,1999). The literature was reviewed to identify factors increasing dropout that can be influenced by the design of interfaces. By using the composite persitence model (Rovai, 2003) factors influencing dropout were identified. The concepts influencing student dropout that were used in the redesign of the user interface were: control, satisfation and social pressence. Regarding control the pressence of information (Weinschenk, 2010), the possibility of influencing the situation (Langer, 1975) and the possibility to change the current situation (Gurin, Gurin & Morrison, 1978) were used in the redesign. Results related to this aspects were the colour coding of the different modules and the posibility of the user to choose part of the training. Regarding satisfaction relevance of the training, subject matter and appearence of the interface were found to be important factors. Although these factors relate strongly to the content of the training solutions to increase satisfacting while designing the interface were found. By offering users personalised training programmes based on their problem an attempt was made to increase satisfaction. Regarding social pressence attention , emootional support, positive stimulation and social comparison were indentified as important factors. These were included in the interface by incorporating a badge system linked to existing social media platform. The factor social comparison was not used in the redesign of the interface.
