Abstract:The purpose of this study was understanding and explaining the relation between fear and depression in polyarthritis patients with different disease durations. Furthermore, the extent to which this relation changes during one year was examined. The occurrence of fear and depression was measured in a sample of 329 rheumatic patients from the hospital ‘Medisch Spectrum Twente’, Enschede, based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. The change of fear and depression was investigated based on a correlation analysis of respondents. The results indicated the presence of a significant positive relation between the variables fear and depression. During the course of one year, no changes of the level of fear and depression were demonstrated and the duration of the disease did not have any effect on fear and depression.
