Abstract:This report is the result of the Bachelor assignment of G.H. van Veldhuizen, student Industrial Design at University of Twente. The assignment is commissioned by Kip Caravan. The result of this assignment is a redesign of the Kip Shelter aimed at a new and wider audience (tent campers). The redesign is limited by the strong desire to make no extreme change in the exterior and the construction of the existing Shelter. The report kicks off with an exploration of the Dutch camping market. An analysis of holiday statistics confirms that tent campers make a significant part of the Dutch inhabitants. Next an analysis of alternative camping equipment shows the differences and similarities with the Shelter. This information enables to compose a target group for the new Shelter; a couple of age 45+ without children or with children which do not join the holiday or stay in their own equipment. Functionality is established based on this target group. What is the true feeling of tent camping? Based on a market scan on tentmaterials and a inquery on the pros and cons of tent camping the true tent feeling is defined in the following terms; ‘freedom’, ‘living outdoor’ and ‘basic’. In order to get a better view of the current Shelter, its use of materials, design choices, positioning and price structure have been analysed. The currrent Shelter is tested in real life and user feedback is taken into account. In this stage four scenarios of tent camping are defined; sleeping, cooking, sitting and storage. The true feeling of tent camping is part of the foundation for concept generation. All concepts contain a solution for each scenario. Concept A ‘freedom’ is a version of the Shelter without a threshold. The whole Shelter can be tilted to make the floor almost at the same level as the ground. Concept B ‘Outdoor living’ is about living outside and sleeping inside. In case of an emergency the bed can be turned into a couch. Concept C ‘Back to basic’ brings al functionality back to the origin. This concept contains a different way of packing your equipment. All concepts are matched with the set guidelines and are verified by interviews with the target group. The three concepts are combined into one solution; Advice Shelter X. Advice Shelter X contains the best parts of the three concepts. All scenarios are described in more detail. Shelter X uses a new way of turning the bed into a couch, does not need a front windows anymore, has only a cooking facility outside and contains a completely diffrent approach of storage. A conclusion describes in which way and how the main goal is met. The recommendations describe which parts need extra attention in case the ideas are taken into further development.
