Abstract:This cross-sectional study examined the fruit and vegetable intake of students (N = 242) in the period from November 2012 until mid-January 2013. Based on the fruit and vegetable standards we examined whether the social cognitions from the theory of planned behavior were associated with fruit and vegetable intake. Central to this study was the Compensatory health belief scale, resulting from prior research to influence risk behavior related to health. We used a section of 3 questions related to food issues from the original CHB scale, which showed great consistency. Results of this study show that demographic variables are not associated with compensatory health beliefs, they also lack to show a relationship between social cognitions. Intention explains with 26% a significant proportion of the variance in behavior. Subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and attitude explained 22.9% of the variance in intention. Perceived behavioral control appears to be a strong significant predictor of intention. Subjective norm was found to be the weakest predictor of intention. Compensatory health beliefs showed a moderating role between intention and behavior when using a continuous dependent variable. However, when using a combination standard as dependent variable this effect was not found.
