Abstract:
In this study the relationship between communication styles and conflict handling styles is studied. Also, the possible moderation of conflict stress, emotional exhaustion and engagement on these relationships is studied. The data is collected using an online questionnaire, which was filled out by 155 people. The results show that half of the direct relationships can be confirmed. Every communication style has one confirmed hypothesis, establishing a link between the communication- and conflict handling styles. The other direct hypotheses are being rejected. All the moderating hypotheses are being rejected as well. Some effects are found with conflict stress, but not enough to accept the hypotheses. This means that direct relations between communication- and conflict handling styles are found. However, these relations do not implicate that conflict handling styles are a fixed part of the communication styles. It means that having a communication style increases the chance that someone uses certain conflict handling styles. This connection might be explainable by a possible underlying dimension, such as personality.
